Chapter 2: The Message That Should Never Have Existed (Part 1)

The glowing screen illuminated Claire's trembling hands.

Seven simple words.

If anything happens, trust Vincent Moretti.

The timestamp froze everyone's breath.

Sent: October 14, Ten Years Ago.

Claire stared at the phone as if it had become something alive.

"That's impossible," she whispered.

"My mother died nine years ago."

The guests who had been whispering about Addison suddenly forgot the scandal unfolding around the pool.

Every eye shifted to Claire.

Then to Vincent.

Then back again.

Vincent's expression remained calm, but inside, his thoughts raced.

He had never met Claire Parker.

He was certain of it.

Yet her late mother had somehow known his name years before tonight.

A Name from the Past

Claire slowly looked up.

"Do you... know my mother?"

Vincent answered honestly.

"I don't think so."

"You don't think?"

"I've met thousands of people over the years."

"But the name Claire Parker doesn't mean anything to me."

Claire swallowed.

"My mother's name wasn't Parker."

"It was Evelyn Hart."

The moment those words left her lips...

Vincent froze.

His face lost all color.

Luca noticed immediately.

"Boss?"

Vincent didn't answer.

Instead, he whispered almost to himself,

"Evelyn..."

It was a name he hadn't spoken in over twenty years.

The Woman Who Saved a Boy

Memories rushed back.

Rain.

A broken-down sedan.

A frightened twelve-year-old boy sitting alone beside the highway after his father's driver had abandoned him during a violent storm.

A young woman had stopped.

She wasn't wealthy.

Her clothes were soaked.

She had been driving an old blue pickup truck.

She had wrapped the shivering boy in her own coat.

Fed him soup at a roadside diner.

Stayed with him until the police arrived.

Before leaving, she smiled and said,

"One day you'll have more money than you know what to do with."

"When that day comes..."

"Promise me you'll never forget how it feels to be powerless."

Vincent had never forgotten.

But he never learned her name.

Until now.

"Evelyn Hart..."

He looked at Claire with disbelief.

"She saved my life."

Claire blinked.

"What?"

"When I was twelve."

Addison's Panic

Across the courtyard, Addison whispered to Brooke.

"This is getting worse."

Brooke nodded nervously.

"If Vincent has some connection to that waitress..."

"...we're finished."

Grant Whitmore overheard them.

"Enough."

Both sisters looked at him.

"You've embarrassed this family enough for one lifetime."

"But Dad—"

"Go inside."

"Now."

Neither argued.

For the first time in years...

They were afraid of their father.

The Forgotten Locket

Claire carefully wiped water from the phone.

"I don't understand."

"My mother never talked about billionaires."

Vincent frowned.

"Did she leave anything behind?"

Claire thought.

"Just one thing."

"A silver locket."

"I've had it since I was little."

Vincent's eyes widened.

"What shape?"

"A compass."

His heart nearly stopped.

"My God..."

Luca looked confused.

"What?"

Vincent answered quietly.

"My mother owned the other half."

A Secret Hidden in Plain Sight

Claire hurried toward the staff quarters.

Inside her tiny locker sat an old canvas backpack.

She unzipped it carefully.

Wrapped inside a faded blue scarf rested the silver locket.

She returned a minute later.

Vincent took one look.

His breathing became uneven.

"It really exists."

Claire handed it to him.

"I've never opened it."

"Mom always told me..."

"'Only the right person will know how.'"

Vincent turned the compass slowly.

There was a tiny hidden latch.

Click.

The locket opened.

Inside...

Not photographs.

Not jewelry.

A tiny brass key.

And a folded piece of yellowed paper.

Claire unfolded it carefully.

It contained only an address.

Blackwood Lighthouse

Cape Elizabeth, Maine

Below it...

One handwritten sentence.

The truth begins where the light never stopped shining.

An Unexpected Visitor

Before anyone could speak...

A black SUV sped through the estate gates.

Its tires screeched across the stone driveway.

A woman climbed out.

She was in her late sixties.

Elegant.

Silver-haired.

Carrying a leather briefcase.

The moment Vincent saw her...

"Eleanor?"

She hurried over.

"I came as soon as I heard."

Claire looked confused.

"Who is she?"

Vincent answered,

"My family's attorney."

Eleanor looked at Claire.

Then at the opened locket.

Tears immediately filled her eyes.

"So..."

"Evelyn finally trusted someone."

A Promise Made Twenty Years Earlier

The guests had nearly all gone home.

Only the Whitmore family, Vincent, Claire, and a handful of staff remained.

Eleanor slowly opened her briefcase.

Inside rested an old envelope.

Its wax seal was unbroken.

Across the front was written:

To Vincent Moretti

Open only if Evelyn Hart's daughter finds you.

Vincent stared at the handwriting.

"It can't be..."

"Evelyn gave this to me twenty years ago."

Eleanor's voice shook.

"She told me if she disappeared..."

"...one day a young woman would arrive carrying half a compass."

Claire felt chills race through her body.

"She knew this would happen?"

Eleanor nodded.

"She planned for it."

The Letter

Vincent carefully broke the wax seal.

Inside was a single handwritten letter.

Dear Vincent,

If you are reading this, then I have failed to protect my daughter alone.

Claire's breathing stopped.

There are people who believe power belongs only to the wealthy.

One family in particular will do anything to keep the truth buried.

Vincent continued reading silently.

Then suddenly stopped.

His face hardened.

Claire whispered,

"What?"

He slowly handed her the letter.

The final sentence read:

Never trust anyone whose last name is Whitmore.

Silence swallowed the courtyard.

Grant Whitmore looked as though someone had struck him.

"What?"

"I've never met this woman."

Claire looked from the letter...

...to Grant...

...to Addison...

...to Brooke.

Then back again.

For the first time that night...

She wondered if being pushed into the pool had never been about simple cruelty.

Perhaps...

Someone had recognized her.

Perhaps...

The Whitmore family already knew exactly who she was.

Elsewhere...

Two hundred miles away...

Inside a maximum-security prison.

An elderly man watched the evening news.

The television showed footage from the Whitmore estate.

Claire's face appeared on the screen.

The man stood so quickly that his chair crashed to the floor.

"No..."

He whispered.

"They found her."

He hurried toward the prison phone.

Dialed a number from memory.

When someone answered...

He spoke only six words.

May you like

"Tell them Evelyn's daughter is alive."

The line went dead.
