Chapter 2: The Woman at the Gate

The mansion suddenly felt colder.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

The only sound was the rain hammering against the enormous windows overlooking the dark Manhattan streets.

Sophie stood frozen.

Her face had lost all color.

Bella was crying openly now.

Luma wrapped both arms around her younger sister while Issa buried her face against Owen's leg.

Owen looked at Emily.

"How long before she gets here?"

Emily checked her phone.

"Ten minutes."

The answer landed like a stone.

Ten minutes.

That was all.

Ten minutes before the woman these children feared more than sleeping on the streets arrived at his front door.

Owen crouched beside Sophie.

His voice remained calm.

"Sophie."

The little girl looked up.

"I need you to tell me the truth."

She nodded.

"Why are you so afraid of your aunt?"

Sophie hesitated.

Her eyes darted toward her sisters.

As if she were trying to protect them even now.

Then she whispered:

"Because she knows about the box."

The room became silent.

Again.

Emily slowly lowered her folder.

"What box?"

Sophie shook her head.

"I don't know."

"Mom and Dad never showed us."

"But Aunt Karen kept asking about it."

Bella nodded immediately.

"Every day."

Luma spoke next.

"She searched our room."

"And the basement."

"And the garage."

Emily frowned.

"Why would she do that?"

Sophie swallowed.

"Because somebody was paying her."

Owen felt a chill.

"What do you mean?"

Sophie looked toward the floor.

"One night I heard her talking."

"She thought we were asleep."

"What did she say?" Owen asked.

The girl's voice became almost inaudible.

"She said..."

"...'I'll find it before the girls remember.'"

Emily exchanged a troubled glance with Owen.

This was getting stranger by the minute.

Four orphaned sisters.

A suspicious house fire.

A mysterious blue box.

And an aunt desperately searching for something.

Then the security intercom buzzed.

The sharp sound echoed through the mansion.

Everyone jumped.

Even Owen.

A moment later Richard's voice came through the speaker.

"Sir."

Owen pressed the button.

"Yes?"

"There's a woman at the gate."

The kitchen froze.

Richard continued.

"She says her name is Karen Whitmore."

Bella started shaking.

Luma squeezed her hand.

Issa hid behind Owen.

Sophie simply closed her eyes.

As though a nightmare she had hoped to escape had finally caught up with her.

Owen stood.

"Don't let her in yet."

"Yes, sir."

The line disconnected.

Emily looked uneasy.

"Legally, if she is their court-appointed guardian..."

"I know."

"But before anyone takes these children anywhere, I want answers."

Five minutes later, Karen Whitmore entered the mansion.

The moment she stepped inside, Owen understood why the girls were afraid.

Not because she looked dangerous.

Quite the opposite.

She looked polished.

Respectable.

Expensive.

The kind of woman people trusted instantly.

Designer coat.

Perfect makeup.

Pearl earrings.

Professional smile.

But her eyes...

Her eyes never smiled.

She immediately spotted the girls.

"There you are."

The words sounded wrong.

Not relieved.

Not loving.

Not emotional.

Just irritated.

Like someone locating lost luggage.

Bella began crying harder.

Issa clung to Owen's suit jacket.

Karen noticed.

Then forced a smile.

"My poor babies."

Nobody moved toward her.

Not one of the sisters.

Karen's smile tightened.

She turned toward Owen.

"You must be Mr. Hayes."

"Owen is fine."

"Thank you for finding them."

Her voice was smooth.

Practiced.

Too practiced.

"I've been worried sick."

Owen watched her carefully.

"How long were they missing?"

Karen blinked.

"Three days."

Sophie immediately spoke.

"Nine."

Karen's head snapped toward her.

The room became silent.

"Excuse me?" Karen asked.

Sophie looked directly into her eyes.

"We've been gone nine days."

For the first time, Karen's mask cracked.

Only for a second.

But Owen saw it.

A flash of anger.

Then it disappeared.

"Oh sweetheart, you're confused."

"No."

Sophie didn't back down.

"It was nine days."

Emily quietly wrote something in her notebook.

Karen noticed.

Her smile became slightly strained.

Then Karen shifted her attention toward Owen.

"I'd like to take the girls home now."

The words were polite.

But they sounded more like an order.

Owen folded his arms.

"Before that, I'd like to understand why four children were sleeping under a streetlamp in the rain."

Karen laughed lightly.

The sound felt hollow.

"Oh goodness."

"They ran away."

Emily spoke up.

"Why?"

Karen paused.

Only briefly.

But it was enough.

"I suppose they're still grieving."

"That's not why."

Everyone turned toward Sophie.

The little girl stood straighter than before.

Fear still lived in her eyes.

But now something else had appeared.

Determination.

Karen's smile vanished.

"Sophie."

"Don't."

Sophie ignored her.

"You locked the refrigerator."

Karen's jaw tightened.

"You took our blankets."

"Sophie."

"You said we cost too much."

Bella started crying again.

Luma nodded silently.

Issa squeezed her doll.

Emily slowly closed her notebook.

Karen looked increasingly uncomfortable.

Then Sophie delivered the final blow.

"You wanted the box."

Karen went completely still.

The room seemed to stop breathing.

"What box?" Karen asked.

Too quickly.

Far too quickly.

Sophie stared at her.

"The blue one."

Karen's face drained of color.

Just for an instant.

Then she recovered.

"I have no idea what you're talking about."

But Owen noticed something.

Something very small.

Karen's right hand had begun shaking.

The same moment...

Issa suddenly spoke.

Her tiny voice barely audible.

"I know where it is."

Every head turned toward her.

Karen's eyes widened.

For the first time since arriving, genuine emotion crossed her face.

Panic.

Emily looked stunned.

"What did you say, sweetheart?"

Issa looked toward Sophie.

Then toward Owen.

Then back to Karen.

"I know where Daddy hid it."

The room exploded with tension.

Karen took a step forward.

"That's enough."

Her voice was sharp now.

Not loving.

Not caring.

Sharp.

Controlling.

Immediately, all four girls moved closer together.

Like frightened animals sensing danger.

Owen stepped between them and Karen.

The billionaire's voice remained calm.

But there was steel beneath it.

"I think that's enough for tonight."

Karen stared at him.

"They're my nieces."

"And they're terrified of you."

Karen's smile vanished completely.

"I have legal custody."

"Maybe."

Owen didn't move.

"But tonight they're staying here until Child Services completes its review."

Karen looked toward Emily.

"You can't allow this."

Emily took a careful breath.

"Actually, given the allegations being made..."

"...temporary evaluation may be appropriate."

Karen's eyes flashed.

For the first time, the elegant mask disappeared entirely.

"What allegations?"

Emily answered calmly.

"Neglect."

"Possible abuse."

"Food deprivation."

Karen looked like she wanted to scream.

Instead she slowly smiled.

A dangerous smile.

The kind that made Owen instantly distrust her.

"Very well."

She turned toward the girls.

Especially Sophie.

Then she said something that made Owen's blood run cold.

"Tell me, Sophie..."

"...have you told anyone about the key?"

The kitchen froze.

Completely.

Sophie looked terrified.

Absolute terror.

The kind that could not be faked.

Karen immediately realized her mistake.

Because everyone had heard it.

Everyone.

Emily spoke first.

"What key?"

Karen opened her mouth.

Then closed it again.

Too late.

The damage was done.

Sophie began shaking.

Bella covered her mouth.

Luma's eyes widened.

Even little Issa looked frightened.

Owen stepped closer.

"What key, Sophie?"

The girl slowly looked up.

Tears filled her eyes.

Then she whispered:

"The key opens the blue box."

Nobody spoke.

Not Karen.

Not Emily.

Not Richard.

Not even Owen.

Because suddenly one thing became very clear.

The mysterious blue box was real.

And whatever was inside it...

People were willing to lie for it.

Search for it.

Maybe even kill for it.

Karen slowly backed toward the door.

Her face pale.

Her composure shattered.

Before leaving, she looked directly at Sophie.

And smiled.

Not kindly.

Not warmly.

A warning.

Then she said:

"You should have stayed hidden."

And walked out into the rain.

The front door closed.

The mansion fell silent once again.

Emily slowly looked at Owen.

"I think we're dealing with something much bigger than a custody dispute."

Owen nodded.

His eyes remained fixed on the doorway Karen had just exited through.

Then Issa tugged gently on his sleeve.

He looked down.

The little girl held out her doll.

The same worn doll she never let go.

"What's wrong?" Owen asked.

Issa looked around to make sure Karen was gone.

Then she whispered:

"Daddy hid the key."

Owen leaned closer.

"Where?"

The little girl carefully opened the doll's torn back seam.

Reached inside.

And pulled out a tiny silver key.
