Chapter 6: The Promise Buried in Blood

For several long seconds, no one spoke.
The hidden room seemed to grow smaller as everyone stared at the faded photograph lying in Owen's trembling hands.
Three young men smiled at the camera.
Covered in dust.
Standing beside the steel framework of a building under construction.
On the back, the handwritten words remained unmistakable:
Three men made a promise. Only one survived.
Richard was the first to break the silence.
"Sir..."
"Are you certain that's your father?"
Owen nodded slowly.
"I've only seen one photograph of him my entire life."
"My foster father kept it in an old box."
"He told me never to lose it."
Emily looked confused.
"I thought you said your parents died when you were little."
"They did."
"But I never knew much about my father."
"My mother died when I was four."
"My father..."
He stopped.
"I was told he died in a construction accident six months later."
Richard looked at the photograph again.
"But this picture..."
"...was taken years after that."
Owen's heartbeat quickened.
Which meant someone had lied.
His entire life.
Little Bella quietly stepped closer.
"Who's that?"
She pointed to the man beside Samuel Whitmore.
Owen smiled gently.
"That's your daddy."
Bella's small fingers touched the edge of the photograph.
"He looks happy."
Sophie nodded.
"He always smiled like that."
Emily carefully slipped the photograph into a protective evidence sleeve.
"We'll need to preserve this."
Owen turned his attention to the brass key.
It was surprisingly heavy.
Its surface was engraved with a tiny symbol.
A compass.
Richard frowned.
"I've seen that before."
"Where?"
"At Hale Construction."
Everyone looked at him.
"The old company logo."
Emily immediately searched her tablet.
Seconds later she found an archived image.
The original Hale Construction logo from nearly thirty years ago.
A compass.
Exactly the same.
"So the key belongs to something Richard Hale built," Owen murmured.
Sophie suddenly whispered,
"My daddy said Grandpa Richard built everything."
Everyone looked at her.
"Grandpa Richard?"
"My daddy always called Mr. Hale his brother."
Silence.
Emily blinked.
"Brother?"
Sophie nodded.
"They weren't real brothers."
"But Daddy always said..."
"...'Some families are chosen.'"
Owen slowly looked at Samuel Whitmore's note again.
Three men.
One promise.
A chosen family.
Pieces that had never belonged together were suddenly beginning to fit.
Just then Richard's phone vibrated.
He answered.
His expression darkened almost immediately.
"What?"
He listened for another moment.
"Thank you."
He hung up.
"What happened?" Owen asked.
"The police just called."
Emily frowned.
"About the fire?"
Richard nodded.
"They found the witness."
"And?"
Richard hesitated.
"He disappeared."
"What do you mean disappeared?"
"He vanished this morning."
Emily's face tightened.
"Before giving an official statement?"
Richard nodded.
"His apartment was empty."
"No luggage."
"No phone."
"No computer."
"It's as if he never existed."
The room fell silent once more.
Someone was cleaning up.
Owen looked toward the four sisters.
"They're eliminating witnesses."
Emily didn't disagree.
A loud crash shattered the silence.
Everyone jumped.
Glass exploded somewhere downstairs.
Richard instinctively stepped in front of the children.
"The library window!"
They ran toward the noise.
Rain blew through the broken glass.
On the polished wooden floor lay a brick wrapped in black cloth.
Attached to it...
Another note.
Owen picked it up.
Only five words.
Stop digging. Last warning.
Emily immediately looked outside.
The street was empty.
No vehicle.
No footsteps.
Nothing.
Whoever had thrown it was already gone.
Richard checked the security cameras.
"That's impossible."
"What?"
"The cameras went black."
"When?"
"Exactly thirty seconds."
Emily sighed.
"They jammed the system."
Professional.
Again.
Issa suddenly pointed toward the brick.
"There's something else."
Everyone looked.
Tied beneath the cloth...
Was a tiny silver charm.
A snake.
The same symbol as the ring.
Sophie immediately burst into tears.
"He knows where we are."
Owen knelt beside her.
"No."
"He wants us to think that."
"But he already knows."
Emily's phone rang.
She answered immediately.
"Emily Carter."
Her expression slowly changed.
"Yes."
"I understand."
She lowered the phone.
"We have another problem."
Richard groaned.
"What now?"
"The Family Court judge assigned emergency custody."
Owen looked relieved.
"Good."
Emily shook her head.
"Not exactly."
"The girls' aunt hired one of the most powerful law firms in New York."
Richard frowned.
"That was fast."
"Too fast."
Emily agreed.
"They're requesting an emergency hearing tomorrow morning."
Owen looked surprised.
"Tomorrow?"
"They're claiming you manipulated vulnerable children."
Bella looked frightened.
"Did we do something wrong?"
Owen immediately knelt beside her.
"No."
"None of this is your fault."
Bella wrapped her tiny arms around his neck.
"I don't want to leave."
"You won't."
"I promise."
This time...
He made the promise.
Late that night...
After the girls had finally fallen asleep in adjoining guest rooms...
Owen stood alone in the library.
The photograph rested on the desk.
Beside it lay the brass key.
Samuel Whitmore's letter.
The threatening notes.
Everything pointed toward a secret buried decades ago.
He opened his laptop.
If his father had lied...
Someone would have left a trail.
He searched old newspaper archives.
Construction permits.
Corporate records.
Obituaries.
Then...
One article caught his attention.
THREE PARTNERS LAUNCH HALE DEVELOPMENT GROUP
Published twenty-eight years earlier.
The accompanying photograph showed the same three men.
Richard Hale.
Samuel Whitmore.
And...
Daniel Hayes.
Owen's father.
Except one sentence near the bottom made Owen's blood run cold.
One week after the company was founded, Daniel Hayes sold his shares and disappeared without explanation.
Disappeared.
Not died.
Disappeared.
Owen leaned back in disbelief.
"My father..."
"...never died."
At that exact moment, a soft knock came from the library door.
Sophie stood there in her pajamas.
She looked frightened.
"Mr. Owen..."
He closed the laptop.
"What is it?"
"I had another dream."
He smiled gently.
"Come here."
She walked over.
"What did you dream about?"
She hesitated.
Then whispered,
"It wasn't a dream."
Owen frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Sophie looked directly into his eyes.
"I remembered something."
"What?"
"The night Mommy told us to run..."
"...there was another man hiding in our apartment."
Owen felt his pulse quicken.
"Another man?"
She nodded.
"He wasn't wearing the snake ring."
"Who was he?"
Sophie took a shaky breath.
"Mommy called him..."
"...Daniel."
Owen froze.
"My father."
Sophie slowly nodded.
"He told Mommy..."
"'It's finally time to tell Owen the truth.'"
