Chapter 9: Locker 317

For several seconds, Owen simply stared at the key card in his hand.
Grand Central Terminal.
Locker 317.
Come alone.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
He had seen it only once before—on the hidden letter Samuel Whitmore had left inside the piano.
Emily stepped beside him.
"What is it?"
Owen quietly slipped the card into his pocket.
"Nothing I can explain yet."
Detective Bennett frowned.
"I don't like that answer."
"I don't either."
A Difficult Decision
Back at the mansion, the atmosphere was tense.
The girls were playing quietly in the sunroom, unaware that every adult in the house was arguing.
"You can't go alone," Richard insisted.
"It's exactly what they expect," Emily added.
Detective Bennett nodded.
"If this is a trap, you'll disappear before we even know where to start."
Owen looked toward the four sisters through the glass doors.
"They've already lost their parents."
"They're terrified."
"If there's even the smallest chance my father is alive..."
"...I have to know."
Sophie noticed him watching.
She walked over.
"Are you leaving?"
Owen smiled gently.
"For a little while."
She searched his face.
"Will you come back?"
Without hesitation, he knelt beside her.
"I'll always come back."
Issa wrapped her tiny arms around his neck.
"You promise?"
"I promise."
Grand Central
Two hours later.
Grand Central Terminal buzzed with thousands of commuters.
Business executives.
Tourists.
Families.
Street musicians.
To everyone else, it was another ordinary afternoon.
To Owen...
It felt like every stranger might be watching him.
He wore a gray jacket instead of his usual tailored suit.
A baseball cap.
Dark sunglasses.
For the first time in years...
The billionaire looked anonymous.
Almost.
Locker 317 stood near the eastern corridor.
Old brass numbers.
Small enough to hold a backpack.
Owen inserted the key card.
A soft click.
The door opened.
Inside...
A plain cardboard box.
Nothing more.
He carefully lifted it out.
No explosion.
No trap.
Just a surprisingly heavy box.
He opened it.
Inside lay three objects.
A leather journal.
A VHS videotape.
A sealed envelope addressed simply:
Owen.
The Letter
His hands trembled slightly as he unfolded the paper.
Owen,
If you're reading this, then I've failed to reach you myself.
I never abandoned you.
Every decision I made was to keep you alive.
If Serpent discovers the truth before you're ready, they'll kill everyone you love.
Especially the four girls.
The words blurred.
Not because of tears.
Because his heartbeat wouldn't slow down.
He continued reading.
Your father,
Daniel Hayes.
Owen closed his eyes.
For thirty years...
He had believed those words would never exist.
The Journal
The leather journal belonged to Samuel Whitmore.
Its first pages documented ordinary business meetings.
Construction projects.
Financial reports.
Then the entries became darker.
April 12
Richard found evidence that millions of dollars were disappearing through fake construction contracts.
May 3
Daniel believes someone inside the company is working with Serpent.
June 27
If we're right, they own judges, police officers, politicians...
Owen turned pages faster.
The entries became increasingly frantic.
Then one sentence stopped him cold.
Karen Miller is not the mastermind.
The Real Enemy
Samuel had underlined the next sentence three times.
The leader has always been someone inside Hale Construction.
Owen immediately thought of Richard Hale.
Sophie's father.
No.
Impossible.
Richard Hale had built the company.
Unless...
Someone close to him.
His phone vibrated.
Richard.
"Owen!"
Richard sounded panicked.
"You need to come home!"
"What happened?"
"They're gone!"
Owen's blood froze.
"Who's gone?"
"The girls!"
The Abduction
Owen sprinted from Grand Central.
Detective Bennett met him outside in an unmarked police vehicle.
"What happened?"
Richard answered over speakerphone.
"A woman came claiming she was from Child Protective Services."
Emily interrupted.
"She had forged credentials."
"She took the girls before we realized."
Sophie.
Bella.
Luma.
Issa.
Gone.
Owen clenched his fists.
"No..."
Richard's voice broke.
"Sophie left something."
"What?"
"A note."
Sophie's Message
Back at the mansion, Owen unfolded the crumpled piece of paper.
The handwriting was uneven.
Clearly written in a hurry.
Mr. Owen,
The lady wasn't Emily.
I knew she was lying.
She said if we screamed, they'd hurt Bella.
I'm sorry.
We love you.
Sophie.
A small tear stain blurred the final words.
Issa's doll still lay on the sofa.
She had never let it out of her hands.
Until now.
Owen picked it up.
Something rattled inside.
Again.
Richard carefully opened the stitched seam.
A tiny brass compass fell into Owen's palm.
Not a drawing.
Not a symbol.
A real compass.
Its needle spun wildly.
Then stopped.
Not pointing north.
Pointing west.
Emily frowned.
"That's impossible."
The compass wasn't pointing toward magnetic north.
It was pointing toward something else.
Something nearby.
Following the Compass
Detective Bennett placed the compass on the hood of the car.
No matter how they turned it...
The needle returned to the same direction.
West.
Richard looked at an old map.
"Hale Construction's original headquarters..."
He stopped.
"It isn't west."
Emily pointed farther across Manhattan.
"What is?"
Then Owen saw it.
On the map.
An abandoned subway maintenance tunnel.
Built decades earlier.
Directly beneath...
The original Hale Construction foundation.
Samuel's journal.
The hidden key.
The underground safe.
Everything pointed there.
The Final Recording
Before leaving, Owen remembered the VHS tape.
Richard still owned an old player in the mansion's theater room.
They inserted the cassette.
Static filled the screen.
Then...
A familiar face appeared.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakable.
Daniel Hayes.
Alive.
The recording was dated only six months earlier.
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
"Owen..."
"If you're watching this..."
"...they've taken the girls."
Everyone froze.
Daniel continued.
"Don't blame yourself."
"It was always part of their plan."
Owen whispered,
"They knew..."
Daniel nodded in the recording.
"Serpent never wanted the blue box."
"They never wanted the key."
"They wanted you."
The screen flickered.
Then Daniel uttered one final sentence before the tape ended.
"The girls aren't the inheritance..."
He looked directly into the camera.
"...they are the evidence."
The screen went black.
At that exact moment, Owen's phone rang.
An unknown number.
He answered.
A calm male voice spoke.
"You have exactly one hour."
"If you want to see the children alive..."
"...come beneath the old Hale Foundation."
The call ended.
Owen looked toward Detective Bennett.
Then Richard.
Then the brass compass.
His voice was calm.
May you like
"This ends tonight."
