Chapter 5: The Hidden Listener

No one spoke.

The disconnected call echoed through the silent kitchen more loudly than the ringtone itself.

Richard slowly lowered the phone.

His hand trembled.

"He knew..."

Emily finished the sentence.

"...that we all read the letter together."

Owen looked around the room.

Every face carried the same question.

How?

The four sisters instinctively moved closer together.

Issa climbed into Owen's lap without asking.

She buried her face against his chest.

"I'm scared."

Owen gently wrapped a blanket around her.

"I know."

"You won't let him take us?"

He looked into her frightened eyes.

"Not while I'm breathing."

Emily stood up.

"I'm calling the police."

This time Owen didn't stop her.

Minutes later, two patrol officers arrived and searched the mansion from top to bottom.

Every room.

Every hallway.

Every balcony.

Every security camera.

Nothing.

No signs of forced entry.

No hidden person.

No evidence.

One of the officers finally approached Owen.

"The house appears secure."

Richard frowned.

"Then how did he know?"

The officer hesitated.

"There are only three possibilities."

"What are they?"

"He guessed."

"No."

"He has someone watching."

Richard shook his head.

"The security cameras show no one."

The officer took a slow breath.

"Then someone inside the house is telling him."

The room became ice cold.

Emily looked around carefully.

Inside the house...

Only seven people were present.

Owen.

Richard.

Emily.

And the four little girls.

Richard looked offended.

"You can't seriously think—"

The officer quickly interrupted.

"I'm accusing no one."

"I'm only explaining the possibilities."

Still...

The words lingered in everyone's mind.

Someone inside.

After the officers left, Owen personally checked every room again.

His mansion covered nearly fifteen thousand square feet.

A private library.

Wine cellar.

Indoor pool.

Guest suites.

Home theater.

Two offices.

An art gallery.

Every room was empty.

Nothing seemed unusual.

Until...

Richard called from the study.

"Sir."

Owen walked in.

Richard was staring beneath an antique mahogany desk.

"What is it?"

Without speaking, Richard pointed.

Something small.

Black.

Barely larger than a coin.

Attached underneath the desk.

Emily immediately recognized it.

"Oh my God."

She crouched.

"A listening device."

Owen stared.

"So he wasn't guessing."

Richard carefully removed the tiny microphone.

"It looks new."

Emily nodded.

"Very new."

"Professional equipment."

Richard frowned.

"But nobody has been inside."

Owen slowly looked toward the security monitors.

Then toward the house staff schedule hanging beside the kitchen.

Tomorrow morning...

Housekeepers.

Gardeners.

Maintenance.

Private chef.

Dozens of people entered the mansion every week.

Any one of them...

Could have planted it.

Richard immediately contacted the security company.

Within an hour...

Three specialists arrived.

They searched every room using electronic scanners.

One by one...

They found more.

Inside a smoke detector.

Behind a painting.

Under the dining table.

Inside a flower arrangement.

Hidden beneath the grand piano.

Eight separate listening devices.

Emily stared in disbelief.

"This wasn't random."

Richard nodded grimly.

"They've been listening for weeks."

Owen frowned.

"But why?"

He had never met the girls before tonight.

Why bug his house?

Unless...

They expected him to become involved.

Before Owen could finish the thought, Sophie quietly entered the room.

She looked at the grand piano.

Then froze.

"That's the same piano."

Everyone looked at her.

She slowly walked closer.

"Not exactly."

"But almost."

Owen frowned.

"What do you mean?"

She ran tiny fingers across the polished wood.

"Daddy had one like this."

"He used to hide things inside."

Richard looked surprised.

"Inside the piano?"

Sophie nodded.

"He said every piano has secrets."

Owen exchanged a glance with Emily.

Then carefully lifted the keyboard cover.

Nothing.

Richard checked beneath the bench.

Nothing.

The security technician smiled politely.

"I think she means inside the instrument."

He removed the lower panel.

Everyone leaned closer.

There...

Taped beneath one of the wooden braces...

Was another envelope.

Owen's name written across the front.

No one moved.

Richard whispered,

"That's impossible."

The envelope looked old.

Much older than the one delivered tonight.

The edges had yellowed.

Dust covered one corner.

Emily carefully picked it up.

"This has been here for months."

Owen slowly opened it.

Inside...

One handwritten note.

If you're reading this, they found me before I found you.

Owen's heart skipped.

The handwriting.

He recognized it instantly.

Samuel Whitmore.

His foster father.

Richard looked at Owen.

"You know that writing?"

Owen nodded slowly.

"I'd know it anywhere."

Emily leaned closer.

"What does the rest say?"

Owen continued reading.

Owen...

If the Hale children ever come to you, trust them before you trust the authorities.

Emily's eyes widened.

"The Hale children?"

Owen continued.

Someone inside the system has been protecting the people responsible.

Richard stared.

"The system?"

Owen kept reading.

The blue box isn't important anymore.

The real key has already been moved.

Emily whispered,

"Moved where?"

Owen turned the page over.

Only four words remained.

Library. Third bookshelf.

Without another word, Owen ran.

Richard followed.

Emily close behind.

The four sisters hurried after them.

The mansion's enormous library stretched from floor to ceiling.

Thousands of books.

Dark oak shelves.

Rolling ladders.

A fireplace.

Owen counted carefully.

First bookshelf.

Second.

Third.

He searched every shelf.

Nothing.

Richard examined the wood paneling.

Emily checked behind framed photographs.

Still nothing.

Then...

Little Bella tugged on Owen's sleeve.

"Mister Owen?"

He looked down.

"What is it?"

She pointed toward the lowest shelf.

"Books don't usually go backwards."

Everyone looked.

One old leather-bound book sat with its spine facing inward.

Unlike every other book.

Owen slowly pulled it.

Click.

A hidden mechanism echoed through the library.

The third bookshelf quietly slid sideways.

Revealing a narrow passage hidden inside the wall.

Dust drifted into the air.

The children gasped.

Richard whispered,

"I've worked here eight years..."

"...I never knew this existed."

At the end of the hidden passage stood a small steel safe.

Its door was already slightly open.

Owen carefully pulled it wider.

Inside...

Nothing.

Except one small velvet pouch.

He opened it.

A single brass key.

And a faded photograph.

The photograph showed two young men standing beside a construction site almost thirty years earlier.

One was Samuel Whitmore.

The other...

Made Owen's blood run cold.

Richard looked over his shoulder.

His voice barely escaped.

"Sir..."

"...that's Sophie's father."

Owen nodded slowly.

"No..."

He pointed to the second man.

"It's worse than that."

Everyone looked closer.

Emily covered her mouth.

Because standing beside Samuel Whitmore and Richard Hale...

Was Owen's own father.

The man Owen had believed died before he was born.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written a single sentence:

"Three men made a promise. Only one survived."
