Chapter 3: The Doll's Secret

The mansion fell into complete silence.

No one spoke.

Not Owen.

Not Emily.

Not even Richard.

Only the rain continued to drum softly against the towering windows overlooking Manhattan.

Sophie stood motionless.

Her little sisters gathered around her like frightened birds.

She looked far older than six years old.

Owen slowly crouched until he was at eye level with her.

"Sophie..."

His voice remained calm.

"You said your mother woke you up."

She nodded.

"It was still dark."

"Do you remember what she said?"

Sophie closed her eyes, trying to remember.

"She told us to put our shoes on."

"She said not to make any noise."

Bella quietly wiped her eyes.

"Daddy was arguing with someone."

Emily leaned forward.

"Did you recognize the voice?"

"No."

"Was it a man?"

Sophie nodded.

"The man with the snake ring."

Richard frowned.

"Again with the snake ring."

Sophie looked at him.

"He always wore it."

"A silver snake."

"It wrapped around his finger."

"I remember because Issa said it looked scary."

Everyone turned toward the youngest girl.

Issa hugged her doll tighter.

"It looked mean."

Emily began writing quickly inside her notebook.

"This wasn't mentioned in the original investigation."

Richard quietly replied,

"Maybe nobody ever asked."

Owen looked toward Sophie.

"What happened next?"

She swallowed.

"Mommy came into our room."

"She was crying."

Bella nodded.

"I've never seen Mommy cry before."

Luma spoke for the first time in several minutes.

"She hugged us."

"All of us."

"Really tight."

Issa whispered,

"She said she loved us."

Then little Issa started crying again.

Owen gently handed her a tissue.

She accepted it with both tiny hands.

Sophie continued.

"Mommy gave Daddy something."

"A box."

Owen's eyes narrowed.

"The blue box?"

"Yes."

Emily looked up immediately.

"What was inside?"

Sophie shook her head.

"I don't know."

"Daddy wouldn't let us touch it."

"He always kept it hidden."

Richard folded his arms.

"So someone wanted that box."

Owen nodded slowly.

"And apparently they're still looking for it."

The room suddenly felt much smaller.

Emily closed her notebook.

"I'll request the original police files tomorrow morning."

Owen looked at her.

"Do you think Karen knows more than she's saying?"

Emily hesitated.

"I think..."

"...she's afraid of something."

Just then...

Issa suddenly gasped.

Everyone looked at her.

She was staring at her old cloth doll.

"No..."

she whispered.

Sophie frowned.

"What is it?"

Issa slowly turned the doll over.

"My tummy..."

Everyone looked confused.

"My tummy is making a funny noise."

Owen smiled gently.

"Are you still hungry?"

Issa shook her head.

"No."

She squeezed the doll.

A faint...

crinkle.

The room froze.

Richard looked first.

Then Owen.

Emily stepped closer.

"Did you hear that?"

Issa squeezed the doll again.

Crinkle.

Definitely paper.

Sophie stared.

"There wasn't paper before."

Emily carefully knelt beside Issa.

"May I see your doll?"

Issa hesitated.

Then slowly handed it over.

The doll looked ancient.

Its dress was faded.

One eye was missing.

Several stitches looked newer than the rest.

Emily examined it carefully.

"There."

She pointed.

"The seam was sewn recently."

Richard looked surprised.

"It was repaired."

Owen shook his head.

"No."

"It was hidden."

Emily carefully examined the stitching.

"We'll need scissors."

Issa's eyes widened.

"No!"

Emily immediately stopped.

"I won't damage her."

Owen smiled.

"We'll be careful."

He looked toward Issa.

"We'll fix every stitch afterward."

The little girl slowly nodded.

Richard returned with a tiny sewing kit.

Emily carefully cut only three stitches.

The room became perfectly silent.

Even the girls stopped breathing.

She reached inside.

Then slowly pulled something out.

Not money.

Not jewelry.

A folded piece of paper.

Wrapped inside clear plastic.

To protect it from water.

Owen stared.

"So the doll was carrying it all this time."

Emily carefully unfolded it.

The handwriting was elegant.

Clearly written in a hurry.

Across the top were only four words.

For My Girls.

Bella immediately burst into tears.

"Mommy..."

Emily looked toward Owen.

"I think Sophie should read it."

Sophie shook her head.

"I can't."

Owen gently accepted the letter.

"I'll read it."

The girls nodded.

His voice was quiet.

Steady.

"My beautiful daughters..."

"If you are reading this, then something terrible has happened."

"I am so sorry."

"I wanted to protect you."

"But there are people who believe your father kept something they desperately want."

"They will lie."

"They will threaten."

"They may even hurt us."

"But they must never find the blue box."

Richard looked toward Owen.

Neither spoke.

Owen continued reading.

"The truth is not inside the box..."

"...the key is."

Emily frowned.

"The key?"

Owen continued.

"If kind people help you..."

"...trust your hearts."

"Not everyone who smiles is safe."

"But one man..."

"...will recognize this name."

Owen stopped.

His heartbeat accelerated.

The final line read:

Find Samuel Whitmore.

Then everything beneath it had been torn away.

Richard blinked.

"Who's Samuel Whitmore?"

Emily looked at Owen.

"You know him?"

Owen slowly lowered the letter.

His face had gone pale.

"Yes."

Everyone waited.

Owen spoke quietly.

"He was my foster father."

The room became completely silent.

Richard stared.

"The same Samuel Whitmore who raised you?"

Owen nodded slowly.

"He disappeared fifteen years ago."

Emily whispered,

"Then why would their mother know his name?"

Owen looked at the old letter.

"I have absolutely no idea."

At that exact moment...

The mansion's security alarm chimed.

Richard immediately looked toward the monitor.

His expression changed.

"Sir..."

Owen turned.

"What is it?"

Richard zoomed the security camera.

A black SUV sat across the street.

Its headlights were off.

Someone was inside.

Watching the mansion.

Not moving.

Just watching.

Richard swallowed.

"They've been there for fifteen minutes."

Owen stared at the screen.

Then one of the SUV's rear doors slowly opened.

A tall man stepped out into the rain.

Even through the camera...

One detail was unmistakable.

A silver snake-shaped ring glinted beneath the streetlight.

Sophie screamed.

"That's him!"
